This event has ended.

Julie Harvey shakes up the art world once again with her first highly anticipated solo exhibition “COLOR TEMPO”. Looking through the lens of a microscope, Harvey layer by layer creates an idealized world of effervescent movement and impossible color. Intrigued by dance, Harvey’s paintings focus on the contemporary human figure and how individual gestures reflect and celebrate a person’s identity.

“COLOR TEMPO” showcases Harvey’s mature works, specifically her use of both intense photo-realism and abstract color. The abstract backgrounds create the music and emotion for each piece. Working closely with her subjects, Harvey studies their movement and freezes their unique gesture into that reminiscent of an iconic sculpture. She begins by drawing from photographic references of the model’s pose, the first of many steps in a time-consuming process toward creating an idealized world. Harvey covers and perfects every inch of her aluminum canvas using a patented process that she created. Highly patterned designs and meticulous attention to figurative detail create a space where foreground and background become one. With Harvey’s outlandish and fearless disposition, this show will be anything but ordinary. "COLOR TEMPO" is curated by Michael Namer and Laura O'Reilly of Gallery 151.

Background:

Julie Harvey has worked and lived in New York City for over twenty-five years and has exhibited her paintings with the Bernarducci-Meisel Gallery, Kathleen Cullen, and Kenise Barnes, among others. The Museum of Modern Art’s research center displayed Ms. Harvey’s work in “Documenting Feminist Past: An Artworld Critique, 1960 to Now.” She has also exhibited throughout the United States as well as Europe, and has been featured in many television documentaries and news programs.

Harvey has worked on projects with well-known artists such as Laurie Anderson and The Paul Taylor Dance Company. She received a project sponsorship from the New York Foundation for the Arts in 1999 to help fund her monumental 75-foot public artwork, the “Liberty Mural”, located in downtown Manhattan. She has created, produced, and directed some of New York’s most memorable multimedia events that have included musicians, dancers, video, lighting designers, and visual artists.

Most notably known for her controversial works that mocked the New York art scene; Ms. Harvey executed a satirical nude series of top art icons Tony Shafrazi, Larry Gagosian, Damien Hirst, and others, which created an enormous buzz that shook up the post 9-11 art world. She also held a Go-Go dance performance within the exquisite walls of the Matisse Gallery at the MoMA as part of the video series “30 Seconds” by filmmaker Thilo Hoffman.
