Kathryn Markel Fine Arts presents Slipstream, an exhibition of new paintings by Trine Bumiller. This will be the artist's third solo exhibition with the gallery.

In Trine Bumiller’s new series of multi-paneled paintings, images are culled from nature and recombined asymmetrically to create abstract impressions of the landscape, conveying a sense of something larger and more personal than the specific elements. Bumiller's examination of the landscape reveals the patterns, rhythms and underlying forces inherent in our immediate environment and she combines that with an interest in our own losses: of memory, of people and of childhood. Each panel is based on real things, such as trees, water, stones, and stars, but depicted as if looking through a microscope; each element is magnified, at once revealing and becoming over-all patterns. Bumiller's process of painting literally builds upon the reflection of loss. Using a glazing technique of applying paint, in which each glaze requires a day to dry, and each painting can contain as many as fifty transparent layers, form and color slowly develop through multiple layers. The paintings acquire an ephemeral, atmospheric depth that captures the process of time. Collectively, combining multiple panels and elements, Bumiller's paintings convey corporeal landscapes evocative of memory and existence. Bumiller explains, "Our lives are real but our memories are shaped by who we are, what we think and what we experience. The landscape stays the same, but doesn't, based on natural disasters, environmental issues, human interaction, growth and decay … My paintings are about finding meaning beyond the visible world."

Trine Bumiller regularly exhibits in Chicago, New York and Colorado, and in 2005 had a solo exhibition at the Museum of Fine Art, in Las Cruces, NM. She received her BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and currently lives and works in Denver, Colorado.
