In commemoration of the ten year anniversary of the September 11th attacks, The Morrison Hotel Gallery is proud to present a special exhibition of large scale, never before seen photographs from prolific photographer and former NYPD detective John Botte.

In this exhibition, curated by renowned photographer Timothy White, John Botte unveils his intimate and powerful portraits captured in the days following the September 11th, 2001 attacks. His privileged position as a first responder and experienced detective gives us the rare opportunity to see behind-the-scenes rescue and recovery efforts in the aftermath of the attacks. This historical context integrated with Botte’s masterly compositions shows us the juxtaposition of the beauty within tragedy and the human spirit that often prevails.

John Botte is a former NYPD detective and lifelong photographer. His powerful and intimate approach to his subject matter can only be described as fine art photojournalism. Working entirely in a black-and-white format with film and a Leica camera, John’s work depicts a deep respect for his subject matter and an innate desire to communicate the moment in a way that reveals humanity. He is also the published author of Aftermath (Harper Collins).

Botte retired from the NYPD in 2003 and currently lives in New York.

John Botte’s longtime friend and curator of this exhibit, Timothy White, is one of the most sought after celebrity portrait photographers in the field, his archive being one of the most extensive in the world. Last year, White curated an exhibition of photographs by Julian Lennon for the Morrison Hotel Gallery. This year, he has selected John Botte’s black and white photographs and printed them in large scale, giving the viewer the feeling that they can walk into the photograph and observe every detail.
