poster for "Pop-Up Soho" Exhibition

This event has ended.

The Pop-Up Museum of Queer History presents our August show, Pop-Up Soho, which spans twelve centuries and three continents, as interpreted by over thirty artists, archivists, and academics. This show is presented with The Leslie/Lohman Gay Art Foundation, and is cosponsored by the Center for Lesbian And Gay Studies at CUNY.

Pop-Up Soho will host a number of events, including an opening reception, movie screenings, a music recital, and two original plays. We are especially excited to work with the Hetrick Martin Institute (home to the Harvey Milk School, New York City’s high school for LGBT youth) on an evening of performances. Additionally, Pop-Up Soho will host a workshop for secondary school teachers on integrating LGBT material into curricula. Working with youth of all genders and sexualities, and the institutions and individuals that educate them, is a critical part of our mission.

Exhibit topics include the life of musician Billy Strayhorn, mapping wimmin’s separatist land, the 19th century demonization of a transgender African-American person named Peter Sewally, the White Night Riots, and the Mattachine Society.
