This event has ended.

Gallery RIVAA presents Arline Jacoby's one-person exhibition, "Made in America", a mixed-media installation that draws the viewer into a world of American memorabilia with contemporary meaning. She has created a complex assemblage of gleaned works that invites spectators to explore their own interaction - mentally and emotionally - with American culture.

The installation "Made in America" takes the viewer on a panoramic journey of familiar images re-contextualized. The artist uses painting, sculpture, collaging – incorporating images of sports, symbols and sacred cows – which compose the messages that quilt together a collective consciousness. Is this the great American triumph or defeat? Politics, sexuality, obesity are some of the subjects teased open and splayed out for examination. The world as America dreamt it is a theme Jacoby explores in the challenging questions and appetites that drive the promise or peril of our land. Some of the work is as pontifical as Jenny Holzer, or as oddly sentimental as Edward Kienholz. The installation updates traditions of collage drawn from Robert Rauschenberg. Jacoby employs street scavenging scraps of culture emblematic of Americans' hopes for their children, which Jacoby now sees as corrupted. The joy of discovery lies waiting in those scraps, for Jacoby unselfconsciously invokes the pleasures of creativity, participation and awareness in a way that is ultimately celebratory, despite her dismay at many of the issues that govern American life today. Jacoby masters the juxtaposition for reconsideration of the ordinary messages that are commanding America’s attention.

"Made in America" is an extension of the ever-evolving work of Arline Jacoby who founded the gallery RIVAA. She has worked internationally and held teaching positions at various schools and universities. Jacoby exhibited her paintings, sculpture and ceramics widely and won awards of excellence.
