"As I was preparing for this show, reconciliation has been a recurring theme in my work, my relationships, my faith and even with current events. Given that this show was going to be at a place of learning, a place to discover and pursue a creative passion, I thought it appropriate to investigate the reconciling process young artists face. I selected Rainer Maria Rilke's poem "I Believe in All That Has Never Yet Been Spoken" as my subject. The pieces in this show are different studies of the selected text that culminate into a site-specific installation piece directed by Dominika Michalowska and photography by Martina Scorcucchi."
David Chang is a Korean-American artist based in New York City. Formally trained as a graphic designer, his interests in Western calligraphy led him to pursue and develop his art over a ten year period with many masters; most notably John Stevens, Brody Neuenschwander and Denis Brown. This past January was his first major solo exhibition which was held at Onishi Gallery in Chelsea. David Chang's work is based on a calligraphic gesture that is intuitive and spontaneous. He applies this unique gesture to investigate and interpet text in a contemporary context. The resulting work is a texture on a page that approaches lyrical abstraction.
