"Notice of Public Hearing" Exhibition
SculptureCenter
This event has ended.
SculptureCenter hosts the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA) Art & Law Residency Program exhibition Notice of Public Hearing. The exhibition features works by the 2011 Residency artists made in response to the relationship between legal and artistic practices.
These artworks take shape in a variety of media (film, sculpture, painting, and interactive installation) and engage issues of law in relation to property, land use, intellectual property, commodities, language, national security, risk, privacy, and criminality. Public Hearing and the Art & Law Residency Program challenge the ways in which we consider how law and visual art effect contemporary cultural production and reception.
As legal and judicial issues permeate every aspect of social, political and cultural life, artistic production is no longer immune. The eight-month Art & Law Residency provides an intellectual and artistic setting for artists, writers, and curators to engage in ongoing discussions and debates that examine the overlap and disconnect between artistic production and the law from historical, social, ethical and intellectual standpoints. Using law as both a discourse and medium, residency participants gain the experience and knowledge they will carry into the future beyond the Program. The Art & Law Residency is a program of Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts.
