"Goodbye party of Y Gallery Bowery and Homeless" Exhibition
Y Gallery (the Bowery)
This event has ended.
Y Gallery will present HOMENESS a series of activities based on different ideas of home. The starting point is New York as a multicultural city that has a large population which is constantly moving in and moving out. A place where its inhabitants adopt new concepts of home, from temporary housing to homelessness; from assuming new cultural manners to longing for their own traditions.
Y Gallery moved a year ago from a storefront in Queens to a basement in the Bowery. At first, the space appeared to be too raw for its purposes; however, the owners thought it was ideal for challenging projects as it complemented the attitude of the streets of Bowery. This exhibition will be the last one of Y Gallery at the Bowery as now it moved again.
Jano Cortijo presents “Seguro”, an installation that references a Peruvian amulet specifically crafted for a person to shield off any negativity and to get rid off whatever has been affecting their lives. In this version, he created a wallpaper with handpicked words from letters wishing him wellness and a tableaux of edibles that remind him of home, family and friends, as well as food that bring back feel-good memories, so useful to combat nostalgia or loneliness.
Ryan Brown presents "To Ray: Love NY", which reveals an amazing historical discovery after a recent exploration of the sub-basement below Y Gallery. Where it seemed an artist was living there at some point in the present years.
Tom Fruin presents on piece of "Steel Projects", a series of stainless steel sculptures in the shape of project house buildings that are attached to street pools in random places emphasizing their homelessness.
Cecilia Jurado presents "Interviews on home", a series of interviews to homeless and ex-homeless neighbors of the Bowery, and a shelter leader about their concepts of home. The points of view are enduring and also worth to be heard, as sometimes extreme experiences bring a sharp knowledge on human psyche and persistence.
