This event has ended.

The title of a Billy Strayhorn tune is the thread and inspiration for this anthology - literally translated "flower-gathering" - of images. Having worked on several project themes that have translated into books or exhibitions, these themes have tended to develop in Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe's life as catenae: from West Africa to the Sea Islands of South Carolina and Georgia to South African apartheid; from health care disparities to her personal experience with the ravages of the AIDS epidemic to the loss and grief of a child after the death of a parent; from the delicate nature of the human body in combination with the resiliency of the human spirit, to flowers which echo the delicacy of the body and the resiliency of spirit as they rebound year after year. This is Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe's fourth exhibition at Leica Gallery.

As a photographer, Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe has always compulsively chronicled the world around her. After 1977, when she married Arthur Ashe, famous people became a direct and visible part of the world she experienced through the lens. Most of these photographs are from the 70s, 80s and 90s and since then, some of the people featured have passed away. Others we have learned much more about, both negative and positive. This photographer has the unique ability to show just enough image information to allow the viewer to come to his or her own conclusions about the nature of each personality.
