Pia Dehne's newest body of work, “Vanishing Act,” reflects her interest in exploring common societal urges to hide, suppress, or change one's identity. Simultaneously hyper-realistic and abstract, her canvases create optical illusions that confuse the viewer's distinction between what is real and what is imaginary.
Dehne uses atypical subject matter in her paintings -- dazzle ships from World War I and II, a crouching bow hunter, a modern jet fighter, a Ghillie suit -- to play with distinct examples of man’s desire to mimic the camouflaging techniques that occur so effortlessly in nature. But that which is presumed to be the subject of her paintings melts away as we fail to distinguish between traditional concepts of foreground and background.
In the Charles Bank Gallery lower lever Project Space, Dehne has created an installation that includes examples of living creatures and man-made modern artifacts known for their camouflaging characteristics.
