This event has ended.

Entitled Politburo: Celebrating Political Art. Satirizing the Language of the Right, Zaharuk's debut solo show is a collection of paintings and prints that challenges the monopoly of language in the political arena and attempts to redefine the boundaries of political discussion. This somewhat light-hearted yet bold exhibit takes on such relevant topics as the Recession, health care, clear cutting, homelessness and the Obama Administration.

Inspired by George Grosz and Honoré Daumier, political artists of the 1800's and 1900's, Zarahuk hopes to convey the idea that in the fast changing landscape of media, political art is more important then ever.

"Back a hundred years ago political artists were able to be much more radical then political cartoonist or illustrators are today. The main reason being there were a wider variety of newspapers for their work to be published in. There was a paper for ever political ideology - from workers socialist papers and anarchist papers to conservative and liberal papers and everything in-between," says Zarahuk. "Today, with newspapers being less and less independent and the demise of newspapers in general, there is less political art now then there has every been," he adds.

Toronto born, Michael Zarahuk (www.zaharuk-art.com) has had a passion for political theory and art since high school. He graduated from the Ontario College of Art & Design University in Toronto, Canada having studied fine art and illustration, but it was as a political cartoonist where he began to combine his two passions. His work has appeared in such newspapers as Toronto's Globe & Mail, Toronto Star, Ottawa Citizen, Toronto's Now Magazine and The Wall Street Journal. Since September 2010 Zarahuk has been teaching illustrative activism at OCADU.
