This event has ended.

numberthirtyfive gallery presents new works by Gary Rough. This is his second solo exhibition with the gallery. Gary Rough (b. 1972, Glasgow) has cast himself as the antihero in his own dystopian novel. His work is often romantic, mundane, bleak and intimate while at the same time touching upon the human condition.

Gary Rough articulates himself in symbols and flashes of lights. His art is one of collaged and doodled mischief, dishonest as it presents an irreverent facade, but is painstakingly produced. Numbers are taken from books, notes dashed down in a hurried scribble, drips and blots of paint mark his work in deceiving gestures. Rough draws us in with his aesthetic daftness, then twists the emotional screw.

By using a wide variety of materials, Rough is never short on access, a necessity for this prolific artist. He has employed pen and ink, nail polish, neon lights, and even old t-shirts. Relentlessly, perhaps obsessively, he creates drawings and objects as manifestos. In his use of quotidian articles resonates questions that pierce the existence of identity and originality.

For this exhibition, Rough has created larger than life versions of his Bad Luck Dice. This pair of 8’ x 8’ x 8’ cubes dominate the gallery, making it difficult for the viewer to maneuver through the space. In each of the die’s glossy white surface, Rough has crudely painted the pips in glossy black and carved them out, creating windows that invite the viewer's gaze into its construction. The view inside disorients as the black paint drips in every direction. The peep holes distort the architecture of the dice and gallery, allowing the viewer a peek inside the logic of chance that dice hold.
