The paintings included in the exhibition are records of James’ adventures in the wilderness and her connection to the landscapes of northern Wisconsin and Minnesota. The works depict dense forests and bucolic streams. Often sparsely populated, the paradigm of man’s occupation of nature is subverted by the preponderance of meticulously painted leaves and rippling water that engulf the figures.
