Christine Hiebert "Up"

This event has ended.

Christine Hiebert has focused on drawing since 1989. Her works on paper and wall
installations investigate the nature and language of line, and a personal psychology of space. By working with drawing and printmaking media, these new works manipulate space in a more painterly way than earlier drawings.

Hiebert began this body of works during a residency in New Mexico in the summer of 2010, and completed them during the following year in New York. Always searching for experiences in the natural world, with these drawings Hiebert tunes into the drama of physical oppositions and the extreme scale shifts that characterized her experience there.

Such activity in the drawings can be sensed as playful, dramatic—perhaps even animistic.

We see Hiebert working with a greater accumulation and manipulation of mass than in earlier works, but this mass does not weigh down, rather it seems to elevate, to ascend. In Untitled (rdl.11.3) the central activity in the drawing seems suspended by a mechanism at the upper edge; others, such as Untitled (rdl.11.2), are weighted at the top. The movement in the drawing is very often upwards, as in Untitled (rdl.10.2) and Untitled (rdl.10.3): the result is a simultaneous strength and buoyancy. They are vertical, upright works: they climb, they lift.
