Medium Matters: Mixed Media Works highlights more than forty years of contemporary art practice encompassing collage, assemblage, and other exemplars of hybrid media. While exploring mixed media techniques, Medium Matters also surveys the diverse interpretations of artistic styles throughout the decades. As a primarily modern practice, many twentieth-century artists utilized multiple mediums in response to the exigencies of their time. Like alchemists, their combinations and permutations expanded the possibilities of traditional media - collage, sculpture, drawing, print-making, and installation - to break new ground within such archetypal approaches as Minimalism, Expressionism, and Appropriation.
