The Odyssey, together with the Iliad, is the second epic attributed to the Greek poet Homer. Written in the late 8th century BC, the Odyssey is among the oldest and most influential works of Western literature. It relates the adventures of King Odysseus and his followers on their return from the Trojan War. Odysseus is traversing his way home to his
wife Penelope for ten years after waging war for ten years in Troy. As the story goes, Penelope awaits her husband’s return for 20 years, thwarting unruly suitors advances for marriage and raising her only son. Homer renders Odysseus a brave hero, but Seyler’s work examines the notion of “hero” and how the characters of this story embody their respective roles. Though Penelope has become a symbol of faithfulness and loyalty, Seyler proposes her strength, intelligence and perseverance to be as noble, if not more so, than the trials faced by Odysseus.
