Arts & Sciences PROJECTS presents “Proof of Purchase”, Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo’s first solo exhibition in New York City on view from November 10-December 10, 2011.

Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo’s exhibition at Arts & Sciences PROJECTS, located steps away from the Canal Street epicenter of cheap designer knock-offs, concurrently explores the allure and glamour of the luxury market while also functioning as a “safe space” for reflection and decompression for weary consumers lost in a world of Groupons™ and all-night super sales. Simultaneously criticizing and engaging the system, the artist’s installation, stocked with precious luxury items displayed on ready-made fixtures, functions also as a pop-up designer boutique where all is for sale, including “YOU.” D’Angelo’s sculptural works, using materials sourced primarily from established retail venues and flea markets, set an alluring backdrop for her presentation of an altered Todd Selby coffee table book and digital C-prints originating from collages of Hollywood icons and Princess Diana adorned in lavish jewelry. A digital Look Book will be available to entice visitors to actively peruse D’Angelo’s merchandise, thus rendering them complicit in the desire to consume. As we dive head-on into the annual marathon of holiday shopping, “Proof of Purchase” offers timely insight into the contradictions embedded in advertising and global consumer culture.

Berlin-based artist Christa Joo Hyun D’Angelo was born in Korea and raised in New York. She received her BFA in painting from the Jan Matejko Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, Poland. D’Angelo recently had her first solo exhibition at Galerie Suvi Lehtinen in Berlin and was included in Berlin’s Preview Art Fair.
