Lynne Woods Turner "New Paintings & Drawings"
Danese Corey
This event has ended.
Danese is presents its first exhibition of paintings and drawings by Lynne Woods Turner. These exquisite, intimate works unite the anatomy of color and the geometry of ordinary experience. As curator Stephanie Snyder comments, "Turner pushes form, line, and color to thresholds of invisibility, coalescing a strange and luminous presence within and around the work."
Both rigorous and understated, Turner’s paintings are composed of quiet, unanticipated colors within a linear framework. An avid gardener, her work reflects careful observation of the natural world – the internal geometry of a leaf, the delicate hue and soft, tender surface of a petal. The paintings are precise and exquisitely wrought – thin layers of pigment are applied, sanded and scraped, developing a smooth, silky veneer of color that seems to breathe and radiate outward. On canvases or panels no larger than 16 x 16 inches, the works’ complexity and intricacy defy their literal dimensions.
For Turner, drawing is a process of distillation and an attempt to put as much as possible into essential form. Her delicate, ethereal drawings often use distinctive, handmade papers – a number of the works in the exhibition are made on pages from old Indian ledgers. The textural beauty of these timeworn sheets reflects Turner’s respect for history and other cultures and ties the works to the aesthetic and utilitarian purposes which paper has served throughout the ages.
Recently, Turner was part of the three-artist exhibition "Abstract", curated by Stephanie Snyder, director of Reed College’s Cooley Memorial Art Gallery, in Portland, Oregon. Her drawings also are included in "Drawn, Taped, Burned: Abstraction on Paper", an exhibition of works from the collection of Wynn Kramarsky, currently on view at the Katonah Museum of Art, Katonah, NY.
Lynne Woods Turner was born in 1951 in Dallas, Texas. She received her BFA from Stephens College, Columbia, Missouri in 1973, and obtained both a Master of Arts and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Iowa. Turner is a recipient of an Oregon Arts Commission Fellowship, and has participated in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and abroad. Turner's work is in the permanent collections of the Arkansas Art Center, Little Rock; the Birmingham Museum of Art, AL; the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University; the Hood Museum of Art, Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; San Diego Museum of Art, CA; the Hammer Museum, University of California, Los Angeles; the Weatherspoon Art Gallery, University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, CT.
