"Children’s Museum of the Arts Brings Collection of 1930s" Exhibition

Governors Island

This event has ended.

Children’s Museum of the Arts will bring its unique exhibitions program to Governors
Island this summer with Art Within Reach From the WPA to the Present. This
intergenerational art exhibition explores the connections between growing up in New York City during the Great Depression and growing up in the city today. Made possible by a grant from the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, Art Within Reach features works from CMA’s permanent collection of children’s art, including a rare selection of Depression-era children’s paintings of New York City created in Community Art Centers run by the Federal Art Project. The 19 original works will be juxtaposed with 21 new paintings created by today’s children in CMA’s Young Artists Residency program.

Showcased side by side, the works not only document the evolution of New York City’s
landscape over the past 75 years, but also raises questions about the public’s access to art during economically challenging times. This exhibition will come to Governors Island complete with a printed family guide, exhibition catalogue, and self-guided, hands-on drawing workshops in the gallery. Art Within Reach promises to provide visitors to Governors Island with an informative and fascinating gallery experience to complement their Free Arts activities, but moreover, the exhibition also presents an opportunity for Governors Island to explore it’s own history as a WPA education center and legacy of free activities to New York City citizens. On view in Building 11, 11am-3pm Fri-Sun, June 10 – September 5.

Also at Building 11, Nolan Park:
Children’s Museum of the Arts is extremely proud of its impressive array of Teaching
Artists. All trained and working artists in their own right, these artists bring their own aesthetic and experience to bear when mentoring students in CMA programs. With five Children’s Museum of the Arts Brings Collection of 1930s Children’s Artwork to Governors Island three-week long exhibits scheduled between May 27 and September 5, the Governors Island Gallery will showcase an exciting range of new work by CMA’s Teaching Artists. On view 11am-3pm Fri-Sun, May 27 – September 5.

CMA’s 8th Annual Beyond The Refrigerator Door is the culmination of artwork created
by students in over 40 CMA Summer Art Colony classes, at CMA in Soho and on Governors
Island. Exhibited artwork includes a broad range of mediums, all infused with the unique perspectives of child artists. On view in Building 11, 11am-3pm Fri-Sun, September 9 – September 25. Opening Reception Saturday, September 10.
