Lourdes Delgado "Jazz in New York"

Instituto Cervantes New York

This event has ended.

"Jazz in New York" offers an introspective and intimate look to the jazz community in New York. In contrast with the majority of photography about the jazz world, Lourdes Delgado’s photographs go into the most intimate of these individuals, to portrait them in their neighborhoods, their homes, surrounded by their own everyday objects. Done between 2000 and 2007, the project gathers more that 450 portraits of musicians of different ages, nationalities, cultures and musical approaches, becoming a social, economic and cultural study that, at the same time, helps break the stereotypes inherited from the iconography of the 1950s. The selection of the musicians is not based on Delgado’s subjective opinion, since it was the very musicians who chose whom else she should include. In addition, to make the portraits more revealing, she asked each person to choose where and with whom to be photographed; and lastly, to let some of the jazz philosophy of continuous risk enter her project, she only took one portrait per person.
