Celeste Rapone "Costume Require"
Soho20 Chelsea Gallery
This event has ended.
Raponeʼs recent work is a titillating display of quizzically costumed individuals endlessly and unknowingly performing for themselves. The characters in her work are caught in a hyper-real stasis of a constructed reality. Churning out symbolic expressions of pop-culture, Raponeʼs work asks us to examine how this habitual behavior threatens authentic communication. How continually “broadcasting” our gender, religious views and nationalism creates an impersonal experience of flinging divisive signals in lieu of actual social awareness. The slickness of Raponeʼs painting style mirrors the trance-like effect found in the characters themselves. Highly rendered forms dazzle the senses and parade before the viewer a kind of candy-coated chaos.
