I-20 Gallery presents Lucas Arruda’s first solo exhibition in New York. Organized by Simon Watson, the show presents a selection of more than twenty-five small-scale oil paintings on canvas by the Brazilian artist.

Lucas Arruda is one of a new generation of artists who live and work in São Paulo and whose artworks are in dialogue with one another and audiences with a taste for the new. Contemporary and also timeless, Arruda’s landscape scenes attract your eyes for a more intimate viewing. Arruda carries the viewer away from the city and into his own universe with his deceptively simple scenes. The palate is so subtle that the paintings border on abstraction. Horizons are quiet and fields are colorful.

An interesting surface is achieved via the brushwork, sanding, and muted tones. The effect is not one of naivete (as in the work of the known Italian Brazilian artist Alfredo Volpi). Instead, Arruda achieves his own special kind of simplicity with elegance (also a world away from “elegance avec decadence”). There is a quotient of mystery that comes from his precise brushwork and layering. He achieves a suspension that is suggestive of the inherent tension of nature.

Lucas Arruda lives and works in São Paulo. He graduated from Faculdade Santa Marcelina in São Paolo and has had two solo exhibitions with Mendes Wood Gallery also in São Paolo. Recent group exhibitions include Projeto Paisagems a margem at Paco das Artes in São Paolo (2011); Vistas a perder de vista, Galeria Penteado, Campinas, Brazil (2010); 7th Mercosul Biennial, Porto Alegre, Brazil (2009) and “Energias na Arte”, Instituto Tomie Ohtake, São Paulo, Brazil (2009). Lucas Arruda’s exhibition with I-20 is his first solo show in North America. Arruda has an upcoming solo exhibition, Nada aconteceu, embora finjam história e ruína, opening in November at the Centro Cultural São Paulo, Brazil.
