School of Visual Arts (SVA) presents "Closer To Be Far Away," an exhibition of video, interactive sculpture and animation contrasting political and conceptual approaches to making art. The exhibitions is curated by Richard Brooks, assistant director of student galleries.

The Romance of Tristan & Iseult, the classic story of chivalry and doomed transcendent love, has been brought to life by Philip Cheaney as an interactive animated eBook for the iPad. The app features a selection of eight brief vignettes, each highlighting a chapter of the book. Originally created in ink and watercolor on paper, the scenes were later compiled and digitally edited. Several of the artist's original studies are included in the exhibition. Cheaney is a 2011 graduate of the MFA Illustration as Visual Essay Department.

In two videos works Carly Gaebe explores balance: how to obtain it, how to maintain it and what happens when it is lost. In Learning to Balance, Gaebe gradually fills her arms with eggs, one after another, until finally the tipping point is reached and one crashes to the floor. In Catch-Up, we watch colorful balloon after colorful balloon tossed into a hot air pocket where they remain suspended. The balloons are easily anthropomorphized; they seem to jostle each other, fighting for space, yet they also dance, play and float until each eventually falls to the ground. Gaebe is a 2011 graduate of the MFA Photography, Video and Related Media Department.

Hyung-gyu Kim's sculpture Chromaphone creates a synesthetic experience, offering the possibility, in the artist's words, of "seeing sounds and hearing colors." When the viewer approaches the artwork, consisting of several tuning forks encircling a central prism, his or her presence generates various colors on the prism and simultaneously makes subtle sounds ring out from the corresponding tuning forks. The entire color spectrum and a complete musical chord are produced by the viewer's interaction, as if he or she were "playing" the Chromaphone. The viewer is meant to be immersed in a kaleidoscope of sensation, as boundaries between audio and visual sensations blur and a "sonic-image" is born. Kim is a student in the MFA Computer Art Department.

Kyunghee Jwa's Piece Apart is a single channel video animation examining human greed in a remote village. The video evokes a layered narrative of envy and greed using a range of analog and digital techniques that range from model construction still photos and live action videos to 3D renderings and particle effects. Jwa is a 2011 graduate of the MFA Computer Art Department.
