Ramis Barquet Gallery is pleased to present New Man, our first solo exhibition with Swedish artist Anders Krisár.

Krisár uses photography and sculpture as a means to explore individuality and the complexities inherent in representing the subject. With painstaking precision, he creates intricate psychologically charged narratives using simple gestures and oppositions that raise questions regarding mutability and self. Autobiographical in nature, his work focuses on the polarities of the human condition and opens the door to a personal world in which contradictory forces are placed in deliberate balance. In the artist’s own words: “The show, and specifically the title New Man, points to the desperate struggle of maintaining an identity.”

Central to Krisár’s sculpture is the subject of self-definition. In his recent work New Man (2011), Krisár constructs an identity through accumulation; a lifetime of all new clothing acquired over the course of one day in New York, wrapped together to form a whole, layered upon itself from infant to adulthood. In M (2008–10), a life-size portrait cast in polyester resin of the artist’s wife’s 12-year-old nephew Johan is split in two, each half reaching out and holding the other’s hand. The mute, life-like child’s cleft torso with eyes closed, finished in precise detail, is equal parts violent and serene.

Fog Father (2006–11) shows a blurred image of the artist’s father, who suffers from schizophrenia, standing against a wall covered in his own hand-written notations. Taken over a long exposure, the father’s static figure is obscured by the movement of his two sons, their almost imperceptible presence captured only in a flesh-colored haze. Transience and unpredictability are key concepts in Krisár’s work. In the triptych Untitled #1-3 (2005–11), the same scene shot three times is transformed by the passage of time.
