This event has ended.

Mad. Sq. Art presents the 2011 season with City of Nature, an original animated video commission by the multimedia artist Kota Ezawa. Make sure to visit the south end of the park to experience this installation, on view until May 15.

For more than a decade, Ezawa has been developing an artistic practice that merges the methods of digital animation and traditional illustration. City of Nature is composed of more than seventy fleeting scenes of familiar landscapes from feature films, including Swept Away, Twin Peaks, Brokeback Mountain and Deliverance. The collaged film footage is re-presented and transformed by Ezawa's hallmark process of freehand, computer-assisted animation.

In much the same way that Madison Square Park presents a cultivated side of nature amidst the urban landscape of Manhattan, City of Nature examines the ways in which popular culture presents highly aestheticized images of the natural world. Come take a look and see how many movies you recognize in City of Nature.
