This event has ended.

Magazine and newspaper photographer, Harold Chapman traveled to Paris in the mid 1950s to chronicle the spirit of the Left Bank. He moved into the legendary “Beat Hotel” a sanctuary for the Beats and other artists who were seeking the freedom promised by the Latin Quarter. The hotel was the home to a variety of writers, poets, and artists - including William S. Burroughs, Peter Orlovsky, Gregory Corso and Allen Ginsberg who fled the United States following the obscenity trials which erupted after the publication of his poem, Howl. The Beats produced some of their greatest works here: Burroughs finished Naked Lunch, Ian Sommerville and Brion Gysin invented the Dream Machine, and Corso wrote several of his most famous poems.

Chapman moved out of the hotel when it closed in 1963 but continued to work for high profile publications. Now in his 80s, Chapman’s work continues to be exhibited internationally, most recently in California in 2010 and Paris in 2008. A film about the Beat Hotel focusing on Chapman and his relationship with the Beats is currently in production.
