Yolanda Sanchez paints in order to connect to the world. She dreams of gardens as she paints, gardens as metaphor and as containers of her meandering emotions. Gardens imply nature, and it is Sanchez’s response to nature’s restorative capacity that is the focus of her life experiences and awareness of being. So too are these paintings restorative. Through Sanchez’s bold use of color, texture and her energetic mark-making, they become a physical expression of the constant energy, movement and impermanence of life, therefore, an intense sensory experience. The viewer can’t help but be caught up in the obvious pleasure Sanchez takes in her process, and to be connected to her through that joy. As she says, “my goal is to nudge the viewer into a deeper experience of the present, wherein the ‘circumference of self’ is dissolved.’”

Yolanda Sanchez was born in Havana, Cuba and immigrated to the United States in 1960. She obtained a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology in 1979. Later she acquired her BFA and subsequently, an MFA from Yale University, where she studied with the British painter, John Walker. Yolanda is a Fulbright scholar. She has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and her work is included in many public and private collections including the Museum of Contemporary Arts, Jacksonville, Florida, and Neiman Marcus Corporate Headquarters, Dallas Texas. Currently, Yolanda Sanchez lives and works in Miami Beach, Florida
