This event has ended.

For as long as I can remember the struggle for freedom, literally and figuratively, is a subject that has influenced my political, professional and personal life. Now, here it is again spreading its hopes, dreams, frustrations, and ambiguities across my paintings. Is there really such a thing as personal freedom? I look at birds that appear to be free. Is what I see real or illusion? Is anything or anyone ever really free?

Am I? In my new work, I've sought top free myself to try a different process-letting go of my usual representational figures to allow abstract elements to become more important than in the past.

I started each painting with an undercoat, over which I drew the figures with chalk. Then, scraping and layering both coats of paint with a palette knife and aggressive brush strokes, I worked in various colors and textures. The aim was to have the undercoat color bleed into the figures above, making what had initially been fairly representational now less solid and defined.

I had been attached to my figures for so long. Now I realize I can be more abstract without giving them up.

Free at last?
