Axelle Fine Arts celebrates its return to Soho and Michel Delacroix’s birthday with its premier 2011 exhibition, “Michel Delacroix at 78: The Paris of my Dreams”. A self-styled and proclaimed "painter of innocent dreams and of the poetic past," Delacroix has devoted his entire career to painting the City of Light which he refers to as "the Paris of then," the magical place where he was born and spent most of his life. This exhibition is a reflection of five decades of gentle memories of a simpler time; an idyllic world remained unchanged throughout Delacroix’s career.

Delacroix’s charming, peaceful scenes take place in a Paris of 70 years ago during the German occupation of the city. The artist reflects: “We suddenly jumped back fifty years in the past. There were no more cars, very few lights. Paris suddenly became very quiet, very dark, and though people were afraid, there was a delightful spirit of brotherhood which kept everyone together." Delacroix, who was a seven year old boy at the time was spared by his age from understanding "the cruelties and absurdities" of war. Instead, he would process everyday life into a lifelong visual narrative of a peaceful fairytale, exclusive of evidence of war and violence.

Join us to celebrate the 78th birthday of Michel Delacroix, the world’s most famous French naïf artist! “Michel Delacroix at 78: The Paris of My Dreams” opens Saturday February 26th, from 6 to 9 PM at Axelle Fine Arts Galerie Soho, 472 West Broadway, New York, NY, 10012.
