ISE Cultural Foundation presents a group exhibition by three Japanese female artists and three American male artists, "ROKU", curated by Koan Jeff Baysa.
The origins of the exhibition "Roku" that graphic conflate the number six and the word for six in Japanese. Two out of 6 artists in this exhibition are Tokyo-based and this exhibition is their New York debut. They are Maiko Hayashi, creating skillful and fanciful animals forms in ceramics, and the other Japanese artist, Kanae Sasaki working with organic and boldly graphic shapes in metal. The third female Japanese artist, the New York-based filmmaker Rima Yamazaki exhibits a documentary film, Color on Colors, about the Japanese painter, Satoshi Uchiumi, showing the artist's process of creating a large painting in his small studio, using repeating small shapes, emphasizing the beauty of the paint itself in the context of the venue size as well as the observer.
New York-based male artists are Fred Fleisher, Daniel Rothbart, and Adrian Kondratowicz. Fred Fleisher and his use of stuffed animals and toys reassembled and re-purposed in describing the human condition in disarming ways. Daniel Rothbart's large-scale installations that comment on the interdependent forces of nature and man, expressed through technology and metaphor. Adrian Kondratowicz, whose ambitious Paint by Numbers project brings people together in the gallery and in cyberspace to create real and virtual works, individually and collectively.
Rather than having a prescribed approach to the entire exhibition, the concept behind ROKU was to place the works of Maiko Hayashi, Kanae Sasaki, and Rima Yamazaki in the space first, then to have the design of the exhibition grow organically through discussions with Fred Fleisher, Daniel Rothbart and Adrian Kondratowicz, as well as negotiations between the individual artists in light of the visual dynamics and conversations between the installations from various sightlines.
