This event has ended.

Three New York City printmakers explore pain, suffering, and the mystery of existence in their exhibition, Troubled Dreams.

For Bruce Waldman, Jahee Yu, and Sarah Sears, art is about expression over technique. Each uses simple drawing and printmaking processes to create profoundly affecting imagery. Adding to the impact is the primary use of black
and white throughout the exhibition.

Bruce Waldman’s etchings and large monoprints show people and animals at moments of peak intensity. When viewing his pieces a whirlwind comes to mind; his creatures quiver with life. Waldman views art as his escape hatch, giving him a place to hide when he has needed one, helping him survive personal crisis and enabling him to turn hurtful experiences into something positive and powerful.

Jahee Yu’s art is a reflection of New York’s exciting, ever-changing environment. She is particularly fascinated by different faces and their unique elements. In her work she strives to portray those qualities that reveal each person’s story. More often than not, those stories are dark ones. The people in her small, exquisite etchings grab at each other in fury, double over in anguish, or dissolve into the shadows.

Sarah Sears’s etchings express her love of animals and her horror at the suffering that humans frequently impose upon them. Her torn paper collages employ mythic creatures to create an atmosphere of mystery and magic. Sarah
says that the lack of magic in ordinary existence makes her prefer fantasy and dreams over daily life, and she pours that yearning for magic into her art.

The three artists share an etching studio in Manhattan’s Garment District.
