This event has ended.

Praxis International Art presents Delicate Matters, featuring Firelei Baez, David Antonio Cruz, Guerra de la Paz, Nina Surel, Nancy Saleme, and guest artist ON megumi Akiyoshi.

The exhibition brings forward a selection of works that touch upon sensitive social and political issues like gender, migration, labor, and the environment. Concurrently, this group of artists turns to the use of the most diverse materials and incorporates them into their works. Textiles, patterns and textures, together with resin, sequins, glitter, Italian porcelain, and ink are a medium of choice.

Intertwined fabrics suspended in an apparent empty space, oil drippings, and collaged paper, flowers, buttons, and glossy finishes characterize the physical structure of many of the works in the exhibition. Both David Antonio Cruz and Nina Surel draw on personal experiences to subvert notions of gender and transformation. Similarly, the Miami-based duo, Guerra de la Paz recycles and repurposes used clothing and garments in soft sculptural objects. Nancy Saleme translates the properties of fibers, yarn, and dyes in textile design to two-dimensional works in wood, resin, acrylic, ink and sequins. Firelei Baez reflects on the female subjectivity in her Ciguapa inspired series, through gouache, watercolor, and thin lines of ink. ON megumi Akiyoshi takes over the gallery’s access space by converting her solid-color paintings into limited edition rugs. These functional objects are handmade in China.

Cool Breeze, a solo show by Cecile Chong is also on view in Praxis’ Project Room. The visual and tactile quality of these mixed media works, inspired by vintage children's books, is distinctive. The artist uses several layers of encaustic, oil, gold leaf, rice paper, ash from Ecuador (her native country), and pigments that have come from all over the world to create whimsical narratives in a soft-colored palette. Growing up in different places and being exposed to different cultures, Cecile chooses nature as the backdrop for her new unfolded stories.
