This event has ended.

An exhibition of works created and curated by students in the jumpstART program, which is made possible through partnership with the Joan Mitchell Foundation.

ABOUT

jumpstART offers in-depth arts-education to high school students through a specifically developed curriculum in our dedicated on-site classroom and workshop. Designed as a yearlong intensive, jumpstART consists of two semesters with different concentrations. The Fall session is focused on portfolio development and practice. By focusing on technical skills such as writing artist statements, thematic development, professional and public presentation, while at the same time providing on-site development of core artistic techniques, jumpstART gives each student a competitive edge in the college application process. By the end of each semester, students will have a professional, well-coordinated portfolio and the skills necessary to enter art school with success. Each student will have completed: an artist statement, still-life painting, self-portrait, collaborative sculpture, artistic research in their sketchbooks, and numerous observational drawings. The semester culminates in a two-day evening salon where students mount examples from their different exercises for a group critique.

Students who have successfully completed the jumpstART Fall program can, by recommendation move on to jumpstART in the Spring.

In the second session in the Spring, as well as receiving fine arts training, students learn practical business and soft skills through the process of conceiving, creating and organizing their own exhibition at CUE. Classes are divided between applied fine arts instruction and planning all aspects of the show, including developing an exhibition theme, conceiving and designing an exhibition invitation and publication, and promoting the exhibition throughout the New York area. The Spring semester gives participants the opportunity to work closely with artists, designers, printers, curators and arts administrators - giving students exposure to the broad spectrum of career opportunities in the arts, while obtaining key skills that will be applicable to all aspects of their artistic, educational and career lives.
