This event has ended.

Inspired by the architecture of the venue The Superintendent’s Keys depicts six narrative vignettes in comic strip-like format. The colors mimic the washes in the Funnies section of the Sunday newspaper, while each vignette presents a narrative scene, characters, and a possible joke or commentary.

Colosi is a visual artist and a fiction writer who has, for many years, been creating works he calls Three-Dimensional Literature. In this project, each of the frames presents a conversation piece. Colosi writes these stories with found visual or literary objects in dialog with one another, in a process similar to the cut-up techniques once used by William Burroughs and David Bowie. The challenge for Colosi as writer, and the viewer as reader, is to discover the narrative links that unite these objects and the arch-narrative of the six frames.

Throughout the run of the exhibition the artist will stage “occurrences” that will take place in the windows. These occurrences will include the addition of characters or actions to further layer the narrative possibilities. Occupying the space of both the street performer and the musical neighbor practicing next door, the “occurrence” mutually exists for the artist’s development and for the pedestrian who ambles by. The addition of the artist as a character and performer in the appropriated vignettes serves to further elucidate or complicate the reading of Colosi's stories.

David Colosi received a BA in sculpture and creative writing from SUNY Plattsburgh (1989), an MFA from CalArts (1991) and an MA from NYU (2006) in the The Draper Interdisciplinary Program. Colosi’s installations have been featured in New York at Cueto Project (2010-2009) and the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2010 & 2008); in Brussels at Galerie Catherine Bastide (2007); in Switzerland in Art Statements at Art Basel (2005); and in Miami in Art Basel Miami Beach (2004). Colosi's poetry has been compiled by Left Hand Books in Laughing Blood: Selected Poems 1987-2003 and anthologized in From Totems to Hip-Hop: a Multicultural Anthology of Poetry Across the Americas, 1900-2002, edited by Ishmael Reed. He has performed his writing in NYC at the Bowery Poetry Club, KGB Bar, Tonic, and Greene Naftali Gallery; in Florida at the Atlantic Center for the Arts; and in Los Angeles at Highways. Colosi has been an artist-in-residence at the Fountainhead Residency in Miami, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council’s Art Center on Governors Island in New York, and at Le Centre Du Monde in Belle Ile, France. The artist was also the recipient in 2009 of a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation award.
