Experiences of visit, return, and discovery connect the work of these three artists, all of whom studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. For each artist, the significance of memory and place, the brevity of time, and the rewards or import of revisiting, whether by destiny or chance, suffuses their imagery.

Celia Abramsʼ plein air paintings are inspired by places of sublime beauty. Repeat visits promote the melding of spirit with vision. Layers of visual understanding emerge. Her oil paintings sensitively express the intimacy of these landscapes. The work is alive with color, light and delicate brush strokes.

Tilda Mann's oil and mixed media paintings investigate how we become who we are. Moments of the felt inner life unfold through a combination of memory, perception, automatic drawing, and symbol. As the work reveals the process of its making, it acts as a metaphor for our own becoming. Color and composition evoke the mystery of cave painting, illuminated manuscripts, and faux naif art.

Jeff Thomsenʼs oil paintings are the product of many returns to locations that retain some unfathomable meaning for him. Each experience there is both new and laden with memory, and the resulting work is reflective of outward time, where animals, friends, and picnickers travel through, and/or inward time, where memories of animals, people, or longings past, come forth.
