This event has ended.

Nicholas Robinson Gallery presents its third solo exhibition of the work of Florian Süssmayr.

Titled Walls and Wallpaper, the exhibition continues the artist’s exploration of interior spaces, the theme of his most recent shows in both New York and Munich. Most of these painted spaces depict venues in which elements of night time sub or counter culture are enacted: bars; nightclubs; music venues; doleful cafes. Painted in the artist’s signature muted palette based around dark brown, a technical device that connotes both the hours of darkness and a literal interior dimness, the spaces in the paintings are often banal but with a clear nod to the uncanny. Documentary, yet expressive, the looseness of handling visually ‘tightens’ when the works are observed from a certain focal length.

Clearly politicized as an artist, Süssmayr paints people and places on the fringes of the bourgeoisie. Choosing to focus on things we often look at but never truly see, Süssmayr’s world is the world of the unremarkable, but shown through the eyes of a contemporary flâneur who is taking us on a tour of alternative society.

Chris Dercon, Director of Tate Modern, and erstwhile Director of the Haus der Kunst, writes: “The themes are simple, perhaps even cheerless….It is something rather gloomy, aggressive that takes over. And it’s about everyday, commonplace things. Most of the motifs are unspectacular. The composition is flat. No foreground. No background…I find an excerpt from my own world. It’s all a matter of seeing and recognizing.”

Süssmayr’s work has been exhibited internationally. He lives and works in Munich.
