poster for "Design for Decades" Exhibition

This event has ended.

Design for Decades is an initiative of the AIA National Component, in collaboration with AIA New York, to feature, archive and exhibit significant projects by AIA members. Work is displayed online in a virtual exhibition. Selected buildings and sites will be featured at the AIA Headquarters in Washington, D.C., the 2011 National Convention in New Orleans and at various design centers, including the Center for Architecture.

The purpose of this undertaking is to feature projects of all scales and types that represent the scope and quality of AIA member work: small, large, commercial, residential, public, private, interiors, preservation, engineering, landscape and urban design. Design for Decades highlights the recent work done by members and promotes the value of design. It serves as a “snapshot in time” that can be viewed by future generations of architects, clients and students.

The initiative was the idea of AIA President George H. Miller, FAIA, and recalls similar AIANY initiatives such as Going Public during his 2003 Chapter presidency, and more recently New York Now and Made in New York, two iterations of our annual member show held in the West 4th Street subway station. In all of these exhibitions, architects, associates and allied members selected their best work – no juries involved.

Two representative projects are enlarged in this Margaret A. Helfand Gallery Showcase to demonstrate the Design for Decades emphasis on public sector projects. The St. Agnes Branch Library Renovation on the Upper West Side by Helpern Architects was done for the New York Public Library and the New York City Department of Design + Construction. PS/IS 276 in Lower Manhattan was designed by Dattner Architects for the New York City School Construction Authority, with the involvement of the Battery Park City Authority. All projects submitted are included in the electronic portfolio.
