Anthony Titus "Base Illusions"

Museum 52

This event has ended.

Museum 52 presents Anthony Titus' second solo exhibition with the gallery. The exhibition features a new series of paintings based on his ongoing exploration of painting and sculpture.

Titus is certain that, at an early age, he saw a spoon inexplicably fly across the room and strike the window of his parent's fourteenth floor apartment in Coney Island. Outside the window, from his elevated perspective, he could see nothing but the abstract expanse of the ocean. It was as if the water or an additional spectral energy was controlling the spoon and transforming its purpose.

Titus is interested in the nuts and bolts of making an abstract painting. He is drawn towards the possibility of democratizing and freeing the process, allowing every element to be considered equally: the paint, the way it is applied, the stretcher bars, the canvas et cetera. Titus does not place conscious emphasis on any one element aside from his final intention of producing a painting. Each piece becomes a series of idiosyncratic decisions, each choice carefully leading to another. Despite his egalitarian beginnings certain elements become emphasized creating clear distinctions in each work.

The result is a gestural series of canvases that subtly explore painting and its plastic potential. The pieces reflect Titus' process and his physical involvement within it. These are very personal works reflecting not only his original objectives, but also his distinct approach to those goals. Titus is interested in taking the singular form of a painting (an undeniably distinct idea) and exploring alternative perceptions of it and the elements that form it. As he blurs the lines between objective and subjective observation he provides the viewer the opportunity to do the same.
