This event has ended.

MARITTA TAPANAINEN’s newest series of collages find this Finnish-born artist exploring an invented, inverted world. In stark contrast to the creamy, gray-scale palette of her earlier collages, these decidedly dark spaces represent a night blossoming of phosphorescent, molten landscapes. The exhibition’s title, The Milky Way, references the moment of mythic and imaginative inception. Tapanainen’s complex compositions of mechanical, scientific and botanical illustrations are transformed into nocturnal fields, crackling with electrified synapses. Using a technique of reverse crumplage they spawn spirals of irradiated orbital masses, globular emissions and astro-fibrillary tangles. Evidences of the real are embedded in wildly organic arrangements that assume the qualities of automatic drawing, suspended against rhythmic backdrops of abstract planes. Tapanainen’s attention to printing aberrations, printed hand-drawn fragments and engraved optical eccentricities found in pre-1960’s source material imbue her work with a sense of immediacy, history and a detached timelessness. Maritta Tapanainen has exhibited extensively in the United States since the early 1990s. This is her third solo exhibition at Pavel Zoubok Gallery.
