Sharyn Finnegan's images come from the coasts of England, Iceland, Newfoundland, Denmark and around her NY and Vermont homes. Her work centers on focused observation of the subject, whether figure or landscape. The time this takes dictates the technique, working deliberately on still subjects in sunshine with oils or pencil, or working loosely in charcoal on more ephemeral subjects such as fog. Depending on the situation, Finnegan's work can leap from 4"x 6" to 30"x 40" or larger, or from a very horizontal format to a very vertical one. She deliberately resists the easy packaging of consistent scale, shape or subject, believing that variability and complexity is closer to our real lives and her work must reflect this.
