This event has ended.

The six paintings included in the exhibition are dense psychological spaces--manifestations of Rhodes’ highly personal anecdotes and experiences. The diverse visual lexicon conflates imagery from the artist’s rural upbringing, present urban environment and recent Italian sojourn.

At once troubling and humorous, these works address social and political inequities. Lost Alphabet, depicts Rhodes’ cast of characters, replete with drugs and explosives superimposed on an enlarged fingerprint card used when processing prisoners. Secondary Market, however, is a more overtly amusing work, using an enlarged cover of the French humor magazine Le Rire as a background for firecrackers, snakes and puppets.

Executed on richly painted backgrounds, Rhodes constructs these elaborate tableaux from individual, cut-out painted and drawn images. The unusual picture surfaces that result from the numerous collaged elements both distract the viewer from the unnerving and explicit imagery within, and serve as an entry-point to the complex scenes.
