Anna Hepler "Woodblock Prints"

This event has ended.

Most of these images began with the observation of familiar things — flowers, augers, fireworks, braids, and sculptural models from my studio. In the process of translating these observations to wood blocks, they took on a life of their own sometimes becoming more simple and abstract than my original thought. I like woodcuts because the images have an uncompromising quality — the material is evident in the finished impression (wood grain) and the carved edges and marks of the printed forms are harsh and resolute. Within the process of making each print there is unexpected flexibility to layer colors and forms spontaneously. More flexibility than one might imagine from the sharply defined finished image. Each print was a surprise.
