David Flinn "R.I.P."
envoy enterprises
This event has ended.
David Flinn’s narrative structures serve as physical manifestations of the imbalance between society’s restrictive influence and our natural human impulses. In his third solo show at envoy, Flinn tackles these problematic issues of repression and investigates notions of defeat and mourning rituals.
Each sculpture embodies an abstract scenario, whether fictional or non-fictional, in which one might come to this moment of realization when humanity and society clash. A concrete pendulum demands a piece of drift wood to bow to its pressure; a triangle with concrete roses and feathers satirizes romantic notions of the ritual process of mourning; and a 60-foot flag crawls up the walls and ceiling of the gallery, dilapidated by the removal of its authoritative elements of height, wind, and symbolic content. A drawing and photograph accompany the sculptures, speaking to the necessity of reflection in coming to terms with this societal-induced void. Flinn’s attempt to free our subconscious is apparent through the hypothetical situations presented in "R.I.P." By juxtaposing both the victory and loss of the human experience, he expresses our potential to realize our own natural intuitions – an invitation to escape from the jaws of defeat.
