This event has ended.

The Nippon Gallery will host a kimono exhibition by Naoki Nomura for the third time. Mr. Nomura is one of the living masters of the Kyo Yuzen style of kimono design, based on a dyeing technique perfected in Kyoto around the middle of Japan's Edo period of 1603 to 1867. Nomura uses traditional dying methods that result in a sedate tone. He also injects brightness by exquisitely depicting scenery and flowers on the fabric. His works lend a traditional element of grace and beauty to women who live in the present age. Mr. Nomura believes that a kimono should enhance the charm and beauty of the person who wears it and that his creations only truly become “kimono” when they are worn. He hopes that this display of his works will help more people understand the richness of kimono design and their creation. This exhibition showcases original works in the theme of “Manyoshu”, which is the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry, compiled some time around 759 A.D. during the Nara period. The anthology is one of the most revered of Japan's poetic compilations. In his Kimono, Nomura expresses each scene of the poem by using various colors he created himself, combined with spectacularly scenery. Nomura’s Kimonos embrace both tradition and elegance with a flair for the modern.
