Bradly Dever Treadaway "Piety, Independence, Desire"

This event has ended.

This installation was conceived initially as a response to my family's experience with Hurricane Katrina. However, the works have evolved into an exploration of lineage, the passage of culture and the reconstitution of memory using a range of lens-based media and installation-based processes.

The themes are generated from an archive of more than 4,000 slides, historical documents, oral histories, 8 mm film footage and public domain sources dating back to the 1880s in New Orleans. There are also materials reclaimed from abandoned homes left in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. These salvaged materials and objects frame interpretations of my family archives dating back nearly 200 years. By using digital technology, I've emphasized our distance from our ancestors and evoked the fragility of our generational relations.
