This event has ended.

Onishi Gallery presents Shodo artist Masako Inkyo’s third solo exhibition, “ShinRaBanSho.”

ShinRaBanSho (森羅万象) literally translates as All Things in Nature, or Universe. Shodo, the traditional practice of Japanese calligraphic art, translates to The Way of Writing. The subtle nuances and the ebb and flow of the line created with brush and ink on rice paper seem to perfectly mimic the harmony that exists in nature. It is only fitting that Masako Inkyo should use nature as inspiration for her calligraphy as the two intrinsically go hand in hand.

Inherent in the creativity and energy of Inkyo’s brushwork, nature, in all its marvel, is portrayed. The art of calligraphy is to translate the tension and dynamism of the bodily gestures into visual, static art. For all their exuberance, Inkyo’s strokes convey a great sensitivity to the meaning of whichever part of nature she depicts. Inkyo uses her awe and admiration of nature as the fuel for her creativity and execution of her work. She uses five different styles of calligraphy, Kaisho, Gyosho, Sosho, Reisho, and Kana, each one corresponding to a different aspect of nature. Based on feeling and intuition, Inkyo matches each style of calligraphy to a certain aspect of nature. Calligraphy is a very traditional and ancient art form, but Inkyo manages to create pieces that are very much contemporary.

Inkyo is the official Shodo Artist for Infiniti. This collaboration resulted in the newest ad campaign for Infiniti, which shows Inkyo’s art and fluidity of brushstroke as inspiration for their luxury car designs. Please follow the link below to learn more about this:
