This event has ended.

The Cuban Artists Fund is proud to present the momentous exhibition Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight, organized by the Cuban National Dance and Fine Art Museums. With the support of CAF (Cuban Artists Fund), these institutions have a presence in the Unites States and are able to share in the celebration of the great Prima Ballerina Assoluta on her 90th Birthday.

CAF, loyal to its mission of organizing and funding international initiatives supporting and promoting the work of the Cuban art community found in Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight the perfect occasion to contribute, create and further the numerous work relationships among artists, professionals and institutions in the Cuban and American artistic scenario.

Curated by Heriberto Cabezas, Corina Matamoros and Yandro Miralles, Alicia Alonso Dances Here Tonight offers an impressive selection of the great dancers influence on the Cuban visual arts spanning more than six decades – almost as long as her career as a dancer. The exhibition consists of thirty (30) works of art created by Cuban artists over the past six decades, each presenting in their own unique style, the image, life and work of this dynamic personality in Cuban culture. Highlights range from a 1941 drawing by Wifredo Lam as a token of his sincere friendship with Alicia Alonso, to sketches for a future work by contemporary artist Yoan Capote. The diverse styles vary from a Rene Portocarrero Baroque “Presence of Alicia Alonso” 1970 to Ernesto Rancano’s almost minimalist conceptual “Assoluta”, 2010; from Mariano Rodriguez’s tropical sensualism to Tomas Sanchez spiritual poetry; from Rocio Garcia’s withdrawal and introspection to Manuel Mendive’s colorful Afro-Caribbean world.

A selection of these works were first exhibited in "Esta noche baila aquí Alicia Alonso” (2008) at the National Museum of Fine Arts during the last Havana International Ballet Festival. For this show, important artworks by young artists were added, who following the paths of contemporary art, offer new discourses and work with new art means and techniques.
