Variations which "Ki-Un(Chi)" taking place in the use of brush and chiaroscuro characteristic of ink & water painting produce might be the uniqueness inherent in ink & water which otherwise cannot be attained. This is a world of formation and meditation which ink and water itself produces. Imagery which comes into being in relations between Chinese ink & water and paper in ink & water painting depends upon the expression of mental images of the artist. That is, ink & water painting might be considered the art of mental imagery which differs in accordance with the artist's mind and feelings. A theme of 'mental imagery' is the expression of my inner world on which I have concentrated for over ten years since I began to study at graduate school. "Kim Ji-Hyun's [Mental Imagery - Longing], although using traditional simple materials, suggests conception of life which creates drawing paper, objects, and the artist at the same time rather than traditional notion of drawing on a sheet of white paper. Chinese ink does not exist as properties of matter of being painted onto drawing paper in her works but it itself becomes life and ideology of drawing and the center of 'being' together with the artist. 'Molgol technique' is intellectual work adopting a drawing technique of allowing picture which 'is there' by not revealing itself even if it exists in an outline of picture. She will grow an excellent artist if she is committed to finding her independent approach." (extracted from the review on 1999 MBC Art Contest by professor Lee Jong-Sang, Seoul National University)

Early works of 'mental imagery' consisted mostly of large scale pictures over 100 ho, which were made while tuning the entire picture with inner feelings based 'Balmuk (ink spreading) technique' which can embody animated "Ki-Un(Chi)" inherent in ink & water painting while pouring many different emotional expressions and 'Molgol technique' which can be the axis of 'Balmuk technique' and 'Balmuk'. Works during this period were made by dashing off with one stroke of a brush, which enables vitality of ink & water to be felt.

To represent unique techniques of mine, I made works which allowed bubbles to be perceived in parts containing air after I created space containing air by spraying water onto drawing paper first and dried them.
