Using the headshot as the basis for this new body of work, Samaras subverts notions of beauty with photographs of what he terms “born actors.” The dramatic photoshop-manipulated digital portraits feature art world luminaries, writers, critics, and friends of the artist, such as Chuck Close, Agnes Gund, David Byrne, Glenn Lowry, Jasper Johns, Adam Weinberg, Marla Prather, and Sterling Ruby. Renowned for his pioneering work with the Polaroid 360, which paved the way for generations of artists, Samaras’s newest work continues to toy with physical and psychological transformation, walking the line between threat and seduction.
