This event has ended.

Frank Bernarducci and Louis K. Meisel are pleased to announce Robert Gniewek's solo exhibition of recent paintings.

Featured in the exhibition are large-scale Photorealist paintings of Urban Nightscapes, Roadside Motels and Diners. Gniewek's technique includes compositing photographic images of different exposures taken at different times of day in the same location. He then uses the composited image as the source for his intricate oil paintings. Another of Gniewek's more significant contributions to Photorealism is his ability to capture the nighttime contrast of the urban terrain under neon lights.

"Times Square No. 7" is an example of Gniewek's ability to choose an image that exhibits the character of the city. Despite their being several figures in this painting of the 'crossroads of the world,' the subject is the immensity of the New York and the isolation it can bring. The dashing taxi leaves a blur behind it as if to recall the fast pace of New York City. The detail and movement all evoke the presence of the camera but the nearly invisible brush stroke recalls Gniewek's flawless linear style.

Gniewek's paintings, not unlike Martin Scorcese's film, "Taxi Driver," suggest a sense of an ominous city and its troubled inhabitants. The drama that unfolds is unseen but is strongly felt. The lone figure in Majestic Grill #4 for example, struggles against the wind on a dark Detroit corner as late night diners line the inside of a greasy spoon.
